1 Peter 1:10-12 • 1 minutes to read
When we experience suffering or difficulty we have a fleshly tendency to complain and pity ourselves. Peter does not offer pity. Conversely he just finished saying this is a situation to find rejoicing.
We also have a tendency to compare ourselves with others whenever we encounter achievement or suffering. In these verses Peter doesn’t compare our suffering with others but he does compare our salvation to the prophets and the angels to show us how great our rejoicing ought to be.
The prophets were given clues and prophesy to speak but didn’t understand or know the who and when of the coming Messiah. They were not participants in the ministry of Christ. Even the angels “long” or desire to know this salvation but they also don’t participate.
Peter is reminding us that we have such a great salvation that even the old testament prophets and the guardian angels look on with awe at the salvation God gave us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
In times when we are experiencing difficulty we need only remember our great salvation was sought by the prophets and yearned for by the angels of heaven. May this comparison generate awe for what we possess in Christ.
Prayer
God, when I am tempted to complain or play the victim, may I recall the great salvation you have given me. Thank you for saving my soul from the judgment I rightfully deserve and for saving me to enjoy eternal life knowing and enjoying the peace and purpose found in knowing you.
