1 Peter 5:8-9

Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.

Many times the enemy uses persecution such as the exiles were facing to attempt to weaken their faith and dependence upon God whose mighty hand is strong to protect them. As a matter of fact, here Peter tells them that Christ followers throughout the world were dealing with the same type of Satanic tactics to destroy the family of God.

The strategy is clear… Resist him! Don’t give in to his trickery or temptation. He’s a classic narcissist who cares only for his own evil agenda to overthrow God’s kingdom by devouring his followers. We must resist his efforts. But how does one resist?

We resist the devil by holding firm to our faith. Faith in God is depending upon Him and trusting him in every detail of our lives. This is what the devil is trying to destroy. Resisting him is holding the ground that has been won through Christ. Resisting is relying on God more and more not becoming more and more independent. Independence is trust in self and is a recipe for certain and tragic defeat.

Reflection

How is the devil attempting to weaken your faith in Christ?

Prayer

Almighty God, may I grow weaker in my self-reliance and stronger in my faith in your promises and ability to fulfill them. May my mantra be… When I am Weak THEN I am Strong for God is truly the great I AM!
