Volunteering provides an obvious benefit to the needy, but there is another powerful benefit that’s not quite as visible.
Minah is a fantastic volunteer who consistently shows up to help when her church’s House2Home team partners with us. She is ready to roll up her sleeves to do whatever is needed with a positive and cheerful spirit. Minah is an extremely busy young lady working full time in the medical field and looking to further her education at medical school to become a physician.
Minah has a heart for the hurting and enjoys meeting and serving the House2Home families we transition from an empty house into a fully-furnished home. Minah wrote us a letter sharing something we think is important to understand when it comes to volunteering. Minah wanted us to know how much volunteering has been benefiting her personally. Here’s a portion of her correspondence.
At the time I volunteered for House2Home, I was so immersed in my studies and focused on my work as a clinical researcher that would one day allow me to serve others through healthcare. But House2Home reminded me to still serve when I can… because ironically, when I give up my time for others, it can nourish my soul.
I spent hours scrubbing floors and organizing closets, thinking about the long journey that Rebecca and her family had already walked, and the difficult road still ahead. It was such an intimate thing to walk into someone’s home and to change it for the better. To even be given the permission to do so felt like a great privilege. As I cleaned, and watched others carry heavy furniture through the heat, for people they hadn’t personally met yet, I was humbled.
Serving one family takes a village, and I really saw the strength of the community coming together to do that. When I first started going to All Nations Community Church, we didn’t have a strong relationship with our community the way we do now, and it really amazed me how far God has brought us. Everyone worked with a shared purpose.
Through these experiences, I began to understand the importance of community and advocacy. I learned that trust is the foundation of these relationships – whether with individuals, families, or communities. Trust isn’t simply earned by words but by shared experience, through acts of consistent, humble service. True advocacy doesn’t just come from speaking for others; it arises from standing with them, understanding their struggles, and speaking to their needs in a way that affirms their dignity.
I’ve come to see that the gospel itself is about advocacy. Jesus didn’t stay at a distance from our brokenness, but entered into it fully, suffering with us, for us, and alongside us.
Through service, I saw how we were all invited to participate in God’s redemptive work, not by our strength, but by our willingness to be used in small and humble ways.
Thank you for the opportunity to serve alongside you. Your example of grace, advocacy, and compassion has been a guiding light for me, and I am incredibly grateful for all that I’ve learned though our time together.
Sincerely, Minah.
Would you join us in praying for Minah in her educational journey toward becoming a physician with the heart of compassion like Jesus. Would you also pray that her insights into volunteering would continue to motivate and activate others to join this same journey.
Minah testifies to powerful life lessons that can only come through volunteering to serve the needy. Take it from Minah… In the midst of serving and expecting nothing in return, volunteering gave her a gift she was not expecting! THIS is the Hidden Value of Volunteering!

Thank you for sharing this testimony!
I hope you are doing well and that the sunday preaching at Pacific Coast Church went well!
I love your heart of service, Minah! Especially when it’s not easy or convenient. May the Lord continue to bless you as you bless others.
