The Super Bowl provided the context for a real day-to-remember for 50 plus men experiencing homelessness.

Thanks to our friends at Pacific Coast Church in San Clemente for partnering with Deed and Truth to make Super Bowl Sunday a Super Sunday by hosting the men from the Union Rescue Mission Christian Discipleship Program.

After a brief Covid interruption these past two years, God resurrected our decade long tradition of bringing men from the Christian Mission in Skid Row all the way to San Clemente to enjoy a Super Sunday in south Orange County. What a breath of fresh air for them in so many meaningful ways.

The day didn’t start out quite so promising as the transportation was delayed and the men missed the 10am church service at Pacific Coast Church. However, we put together a make-shift devotional time at the park right before lunch. We were inspired by 12 men who shared a scripture verse that had special meaning to them in an impromptu tag-team sermon.

After enjoying Jim’s grilled hot dogs & free time at the park, we walked back to the church and men from the church and the mission settled in to watch Super Bowl LVII. At halftime the women from the church provided an incredible buffet dinner and everyone had as much food as they wanted… most had seconds, many had thirds, and almost all took take-outs at the end of the night.

Super Bowl Sunday was certainly a Super Sunday for so many reasons… A super sunny day, a super sermon delivered by the men themselves, a super relaxing time at the park, a super supper, a super ending to the game, and just a super fun way to escape the struggles of skid row, if only for one day, with a super church with a super large heart for those doing the super hard work to overcome homelessness!

Thank you to the church leadership for agreeing to host the Super Bowl Event again this year. Big props to Gaby, Dirk, Ron, Mike, and all the wonderful volunteers that served, provided side dishes, and the dishes themselves!

Just like the Super Bowl game itself, it takes a Super Team to make a Super Sunday. Great job to all our team members from Pacific Coast Church and Deed and Truth.

I’m certain Jesus is Super Delighted to see the unity and love displayed in his name, with members of his family, from two super-different environments.

The men pass along their gratitude for a Super Sunday!

  1. Great time playing sports, eating a ton and watching a great game with the guys (and major thank you’s to all the ladies who setup, cooked, served, cleaned, etc…!!!) Blessed to hear the testimonies from guys whose lives have been transformed by God’s word with the help of the URM, Deed and Truth and brothers & siters who love them! God is good all the time!

  2. Loved reading this and seeing the photos Dan & Betty. Looks like a great time. I love that our church does this and that we are all given the opportunity to partake and help pull it together. I hope PCC continues to partner with deed and truth in this SUPER SUNDAY event. 💕
