More Than A Game

The men at the mission thoroughly enjoyed the Super Bowl. But thanks to Deed and Truth it was more than a game…

Given Los Angeles and the Union Rescue Mission are still under pretty strict Covid protocols, we were unable to continue our long-standing tradition of watching the game with our mentor friends at Pacific Coast Church in San Clemente. Therefore, Deed and Truth sponsored four parties in different locations in the building on Skid Row.

All the men were able to watch the game on giant screen TVs as the Rams & Bengals battled for the Championship trophy. As you know, the game was Super exciting and the roar was heard throughout the building when the Rams scored on their final drive to take the lead and became the NFL Super Bowl Champions.

But as exciting as the game turned out to be, the Super Bowl was more than a game to us at the mission. The goal was not simply to watch the BIG GAME on BIG SCREENS. It was a CONTEXT to create and promote community life. People end up on skid row primarily because they lack functional relationships. Therefore, we aren’t simply trying to transition them into housing or prepare them to get a job. Although those two things are of utmost importance to successful living, the root issue of homelessness must be the first priority… that’s RELATIONSHIPS.

Deed and Truth provided plenty of snacks, pizza, and dessert. We also had lots prizes to give away. But the purpose was to have fun enjoying each other, watching the game TOGETHER and experience the enabling power of being in personal relationships with one another.

The game, the TVs, the snacks, food, and prizes were all part of a grander plan… to speak into the root cause of homelessness… “ALONENESS”… “DISCONNECTEDNESS”!
